Hydroenergy

  • Hydroenergy

The energy of water flows is utilized since ancient times. Currently in terms of covering the electricity consumption in Slovakia the hydroenergy have the largest share from renewable sources. Moreover, its importance is growing with each shutdown of nuclear power plant.

The Slovak Republic is currently utilizing only 56.4% of its hydroenergetic potential. In terms of covering the consumption of electricity (which is only part of total energy consumption) the largest share of renewable sources has the hydropower. In the current state of technology the hydroelectric power plants are very effective, renewable and clean sources of electric energy. The basic task of hydro power plants is usually to generate electricity, but often they serve also for other purposes – as protection against flooding, providing water for drinking, agriculture and industry, for sports and recreational boating, fishing , recreation, etc.)..

The hydro power is valuable for its ability to quickly respond to the load variations in the power system. Hydropower plants with secondary hydraulic accumulation are an important storage of energy usable at the time of increased demand in the power system.
